Sombra

This project was a challenge to create multi-functional furniture for our increasingly small urban living spaces.  Not that small living spaces are the problem, it is just a testament to how good we are at wasting space.  The form of this piece was inspired by the relationship between light, architecture and the ever-changing cast shadows they manifest.  Thus began the process of developing the distorted shape mainly in 3-dimensional mock-ups.  These ranged from scaled cardboard models, to full scale wood prototypes.  This range of exploration in the form allowed for a continuous progression towards refinement.  The final piece was made of Baltic birch to celebrate the linear pattern of the end-grain and accentuate the architectonic form.  The modular form lends itself to act as a table, stacked shelf, or as a singular stool.  This project was chosen for exhibition in multiple shows and is currently in limited production for a retail outlet.
